Mathura


Mathura, birth place of lord Krishna is located on the western bank of river Yamuna at latitude 27degree 41 Minute N and 77Degree and 41 Minuet E. It is 145 Km south-east of Delhi and 58 Km north west of Agra in the State of Uttar Pradesh.

For about 3000 Year it was the hub of culture and civilization . Held in sanctity by the Buddhists, Jain and Brahmanical faith alike, it has a long and chequered history. One of the Sapta Mahapuris, it was ruled in turns by the kings of Solar and Lunar dynasties and became a center of three Cultures India Indo-Scythian and Hellenstic. The great school of sculpture known as Mathura school of Art flourished here for 1200 Years. Such proliflic creativety and gushing devotion to novel Art Forms and experi-ment in sculptures and clay figurines as found in this school are rare in the annals of indian Art History. A survey of this glorious School of Art can be made in the Government Museum, Mathura.

Govardhan hill

Govardhan famous for Holy Goverdhan Hill.There are many temple in this town Haridev Mandir, Daan-Ghati Mandir and Mukharbind. The temple god is another form of Lord Krishna. Govardhan Hill was about 3km (2 miles) high 5,000 years ago, but because of the curse of Pulastya Muni, it is sinking the height of a sesame seed daily. Presently at its highest point the hill is just 25m (80 ft) high.

Krishna Janambhoomi Temple

Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple is the most sought after devout centers in Mathura. Its predominance over the other holy spots are due to the belief that the temple stands on the same place where lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev. Numerous articles excavated from the site bare testimony to the legendary story of Sri Krishna’a birth.

Bhagwan Krishna is Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu, worshiped across many traditions and cultures of Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism). After Krishna gave Srimad Bhagwad Gita gyan to Prince Arjun, did the whole world came to know that Krishna is the only supreme God who took Avatar in Dwapar Yug. Initially, this truth was known only to near and dear ones of Bhagwan Krishna.

Kusum Sarovar

Kusuma-sarovara is on the right of the parikrama path, about one-and-a-half miles south-west of Radha-Kunda. A forest of flowers (kusuma) was here full of varieties of trees, creepers and flowers like bell, cameli, juhi, yuthi, mallika and campaka. Radhika ji used to come here on the pretext of picking flowers with her sakhis, but Her real intent was to meet rasika Shri Krishna, with whom She would have love-quarrels and sarcastic exchanges full of rasa.

The sarovar also encompasses a flight of stairs along its ghat. The ghat comprises huge flora and fauna along with Kadamb tree, which is believed to be the favourite of Lord Krishna. Tourists visiting this ghat can also indulge in bathing or swimming in this sarovar. Moreover, tourists can also sight beautiful view of aarti in the evening.

Radha Kund

Radha Kund is the bathing place of Radharani and Her most elevated assistants, the gopis or cowherd girls. Radha Kund is located on the northern end of Govardhan Hill in the area of Greater Vrajamandala, not far from Vrindavana or Mathura. Sri Rupa Gosvami explains in verses 9 and 10 of his Sri Upadesamrita that out of all the places in Vraja, Radha Kund is superior to them all because it is flooded with the ambrosial nectar of Krishna prema, ecstatic love of God. Therefore, those who live here are the most fortunate in the universe. The Padma Purana also explains that just as Radharani is most dear to Krishna, Her bathing place of Radha Kund is also dear to Him.

Radha Kund is the holiest place in all of Brahma’s creation. Radha Kund and Shyama Kund represent the eyes of Govardhan, which is in the shape of a peacock. This is the place where Radha and Krishna performed their most intimate and most sweet pastimes.

Radha Ballabh Temple

The holy land of Vrindavan preserve the sacred and divine love of Radha and Krishna. Radha Vallabh Temple  is one emblem of this love. It is the oldest and long-lived temple which was constructed in 1585. Sundardas Bhatnagar got permission from Akbar's court (the ruler at that period) to construct this temple. It was founded by Goswami Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu.

Dwarkadhish Temple

Dwarkadhish Temple is an inexorable part of the religious shrines of Mathura. Mathura is a small town in the western part of Uttar Pradesh. In terms of religion, Mathura is an important place, where Lord Krishna took birth, around 5000 years ago. Located in the eastern part of Mathura, Dwarkadheesh Mandir can be reached easily by means of local transport available in Mathura. It is also accessible from Delhi through regular buses and private taxis.

Dwarkadheesh Temple is one of the most visited shrines of Mathura. Built in 1814, Dwarkadhish Temple is said to have been constructed by Seth Gokul Das Parikh, who was the treasurer of the Gwalior Estate. He was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and erected the shrine to commemorate the deity. In the present day, Dwarikadhish Temple is administered by the followers of the Vallabhacharya sect. The main shrine embraces the images of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha. Apart from the image of Radha-Krishna, the shrine has images of other Gods of the Hindu Pantheon. The structure of the temple has the glimpse of local art and architecture. The interiors boast the excellent work of art, brilliant carvings and exquisite paintings.
 

Vishram Ghat

The Vishram Ghat is lined with elegant temples and some of Mathura's most important shrines are found here - the Mukut Temple, Radha-Damodar, Murli Manohar, Neelkantheshwar, Yamuna-Krishna, Langali Hanuman and Narasimha temples. The baithak of the great Vaishnava Saint, Mahaprabhu Ballabha Chaitanya, is also nearby.

The aarti held at the Vishram Ghat every evening is not to be missed, for the little oil lamps that are floated on the river set the placid water sparkle with countless flickering lights. Sri Krishna Janmasthan

The Shri Krishna Janmasthan at Mathura is the most important site for the followers of Lord Krishna and that of Hinduism. They believe that it is here that the Lord took birth as a human being to get rid of the evil. The temple here can be divided into three parts the Garbha-Griha (actual site of birth), Keshavadeva and the Bhagvata Bhavan. Another temple, dedicated to the Ashthabhuja Ma Yogmaya stands near the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum.

The Shri Krishna Janmasthan is a must visit destination for the devotees. The temple is under high security and hence you may be subjected to checking before being allowed inside the temple premises.
